Kevin

Systema Delenda Est

Kevin is a former friend of Isaac and a meta whose metal-bladed forearms have left him nearly unemployable. That disability has pushed him into a supervillain gang, where even dangerous physical abilities provide him with some practical worth and an income. His appearance is therefore shaped by social exclusion as much as by menace: he is not presented as a powerful leader, but as a marginal bruiser whose dangerous body has become his only dependable commodity.

Identity and Circumstances

Kevin is compact and wiry, with steel-colored arms, a long face, dirty blond hair, a weak chin, and the twitchy, glazed look of a drug addict. The blades remain bare despite the cold, making his identity immediately recognizable when Isaac approaches the gas station. His physical mutation is both weapon and stigma. It makes ordinary employment nearly impossible, while making him useful to gangsters who value intimidation and violence. The narration treats his criminal affiliation as an obviously poor decision without reducing the economic pressure behind it: at least the gang gives Kevin a place where his condition has market value.

Kevin’s drug use further diminishes his social position. His eyes clear only when Isaac’s posture forces him out of his drug-induced haze, and his speech repeatedly trails, stammers, or repeats itself. He is dangerous enough that Isaac worries about being attacked or accidentally cut, but unstable enough that Isaac reads him as someone who follows stronger personalities rather than directing them. Kevin’s body suggests violence; his behavior suggests dependency.

Encounter with Isaac

Kevin reenters the narrative when Isaac needs an introduction to someone who can buy softchips. Isaac approaches him at a gas station and deliberately invades his personal space, using the manner of a superior ganger. The performance makes Kevin step back and look again at the person he once knew. Isaac’s greeting is outwardly familiar, but the encounter is governed by distrust: he cannot afford to treat a criminal associate as a friend while trying to move illicit goods quickly.

When Isaac reminds Kevin that he claimed to have a contact, Kevin identifies Kleppy and agrees to make the introduction. Kevin does not negotiate from strength. He circles around Isaac when ordered to lead the way, glances back repeatedly, and follows Isaac through the streets while Isaac maintains the posture of someone who owns the road. The exchange turns their former friendship into a temporary transaction. Kevin supplies access; Isaac supplies the money and the intimidation.

Connection to Kleppy and the Softchip Sale

Kevin leads Isaac to a barred-window pawn shop whose sign advertises that it buys anything. The introduction gives Isaac a better chance of liquidating the softchips than an anonymous sale would have offered. Kleppy pays for two boxes with credsticks, and the transaction appears to depend partly on Kevin’s connection and partly on the expectation that Isaac may bring more product. Kevin remains present and listens closely when Kleppy asks whether additional softchips will be available.

Kevin’s importance in the scene is consequently practical rather than authoritative. He is the bridge between Isaac and the fence, but he does not control the terms of the sale. Once the exchange is complete, Isaac gives Kevin a small payment for his help by tossing him several tabs from the smallest credstick. The gesture acknowledges Kevin’s contribution while keeping the relationship deliberately limited: Isaac pays him off rather than restoring the friendship.

Drugs, Refusal, and Separation

After receiving the money, Kevin offers Isaac access to a dealer for Fasttab, describing the drug as something that makes everything seem slow. Isaac refuses immediately. He will not join Kevin on a drug run and explicitly presents himself as someone who stays clean. Kevin’s offer reveals how completely his world has narrowed around gang work and narcotics: even after helping complete a profitable transaction, his instinct is to redirect the encounter toward another intoxicant.

The refusal separates the two men more decisively than the earlier intimidation does. Kevin frowns, then scurries away into deeper gang territory, while Isaac heads in the opposite direction. Their paths divide geographically and morally. Isaac has used gangland behavior as a temporary disguise to complete a dangerous sale; Kevin remains embedded in the environment that Isaac is trying to leave. The former friend becomes a reminder of the life Isaac might have entered or tolerated if necessity had been allowed to dictate every choice.

Narrative Role and Significance

Kevin functions as a threshold figure between Isaac’s ordinary identity and the criminal world he briefly enters. His introduction opens access to Kleppy and makes the softchip sale possible, but his presence also marks the limits of Isaac’s involvement. Kevin can provide a contact and offer drugs, yet he cannot offer security, trust, or a route out of gang territory. His role is therefore structurally small but sharply defined: he is the compromised intermediary through whom Isaac obtains money while confronting the human cost of the world he is exploiting.

The scene also draws a contrast between performed identity and lived identity. Isaac can imitate a superior ganger, carrying brass knuckles and projecting confidence, then discard the jacket, chains, tattoo, and stance in an alley and return to his janitor persona. Kevin has no comparable exit. His steel forearms, addiction, and gang affiliation remain visible and mutually reinforcing. Where Isaac treats criminality as equipment, Kevin has been trapped inside it. That contrast gives Kevin’s brief appearance its lasting force: he is not merely a contact, but evidence of what happens when a dangerous body and a hostile economy leave a person with too few acceptable ways to live.
